What is Carbon Monoxide Poisoning?

What is Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon monoxide is a gas that can leak from appliances if they are old or not serviced regularly. Carbon monoxide is difficult to detect because it has no smell, so it is important for apartments and homes to have a carbon monoxide detector. Carbon monoxide can cause life threatening health issues such as brain injury, heart damage, and death.

How to get help?

It is important to know if you have been exposed to a large amount of carbon monoxide. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath, fainting, or nausea and vomiting. Carbon monoxide poisoning can be diagnosed by a doctor.

Landlords and property managers are required by law to provide a carbon monoxide detector to units that they rent out in California. If your landlord does not provide this or provide protection against carbon monoxide, they are breaking the law. They are also required to make sure that any refrigerators, furnaces, heaters, washers, dryers, and stoves are all maintained so that they do not leak carbon monoxide.
