Affects of Mold in Your Home
How to deal with mold in your home
How can you identify mold?
Mold can be seen as fuzzy, discolored, or slimy patches that increase in size as they grow. Mold also produces damp, musty odors. Bathrooms, window moldings, refrigerator doors, and surfaces on and around air conditioners are especially susceptible to mold growth.
What are the health risks associated with mold?
People who have allergies or sensitivities to mold can have symptoms such as:
Skin irritation
Nasal congestion
Throat irritation
Headaches
Difficulty breathing
People with immune or respiratory health issues are at risk of developing more serious health problems when in the presence of mold. In certain cases, mold can lead to bronchitis, allergic alveolitis, or other more serious illnesses.
What should you do if you find mold in your home?
If you find mold in your home, you should report the issue to your landlord, and take photos so that you can provide documentation. Under the California Civil Code 1941.1, landlords have the responsibility to substantially comply with housing and building codes that materially affect a tenant’s safety and health. California law requires that landlords repair or remediate any mold found in the rental home.
In addition, if you believe that you are suffering any health issues due to mold, you should visit your primary physician, perform a mold and indoor air quality test, and take allergy medication or utilize nasal spray.
